The Titan Submersible

The Titan submersible was a five-person submersible vessel operated by OceanGate Inc. It was 6.7 meters long and 10,432 kilograms in weight. The entire pressure vessel consisted of two titanium hemispheres with matching titanium interface rings bonded to the 142 cm internal diameter, 2.4-meter-long carbon fiber-wound cylinder. One of the titanium hemispherical end caps was fitted with a 380 mm diameter acrylic

The Titan was designed to dive to a depth of 4,000 meters and carry a crew of five. It was equipped with a variety of scientific instruments, including a high-definition video camera, a still camera, and a sonar system.

On June 18, 2023, the Titan was on an expedition to survey the wreck of the Titanic when it imploded during its descent. All five people on board were killed. The cause of the implosion is still under investigation.

The Titan submersible was a significant loss to the deep-sea exploration community. It was one of the few submersibles capable of carrying a crew of five to the depths of the Titanic wreck. The loss of the Titan also highlighted the dangers of deep-sea exploration.

The investigation into the Titan implosion is ongoing. The US Coast Guard has convened a Marine Board of Investigation to determine the cause of the accident. The investigation is expected to take several months to complete.
