Reported Speech: Imperative Sentences

When reporting imperative sentences, we typically follow these rules:

Use ‘to’ + verb for affirmative commands.

Use ‘not to’ + verb for negative commands.

Reporting verbs like told, ordered, asked, advised, requested, urged, warned, commanded, forbade are used depending on the context.


Examples of Direct and Indirect Speech (Imperative Sentences)

Affirmative Imperative Sentences

  • Direct: The teacher said, "Complete your homework."
  •  Indirect: The teacher told us to complete our homework.
  • Direct: The doctor said, "Take the medicine on time."
  •  Indirect: The doctor advised me to take the medicine on time.
  • Direct: The officer said, "Follow the rules strictly."
  •  Indirect: The officer ordered them to follow the rules strictly.
  • Direct: The mother said, "Help your younger brother."
  •  Indirect: The mother asked me to help my younger brother.
  • Direct: He said, "Call me when you reach home."
  •  Indirect: He told me to call him when I reached home.
  • Direct: The coach said, "Practice daily to improve your game."
  •  Indirect: The coach advised the players to practice daily to improve their game.
  • Direct: The boss said, "Submit the report by tomorrow."
  •  Indirect: The boss instructed us to submit the report by tomorrow.
  • Direct: The guide said, "Keep your passports ready."
  •  Indirect: The guide told the tourists to keep their passports ready.
  • Direct: The policeman said, "Drive carefully on the highway."
  •  Indirect: The policeman warned the driver to drive carefully on the highway.
  • Direct: She said, "Water the plants daily."
  •  Indirect: She told me to water the plants daily.
Negative Imperative Sentences
  • Direct: The teacher said, "Don't talk in the classroom."
  •  Indirect: The teacher told the students not to talk in the classroom.
  • Direct: The doctor said, "Don’t eat junk food."
  •  Indirect: The doctor advised me not to eat junk food.
  • Direct: The officer said, "Do not enter the restricted area."
  •  Indirect: The officer warned them not to enter the restricted area.
  • Direct: The mother said, "Don’t touch the hot pan."
  •  Indirect: The mother told me not to touch the hot pan.
  • Direct: The father said, "Don’t waste your time on video games."
  •  Indirect: The father advised his son not to waste his time on video games.
  • Direct: The principal said, "Do not litter the school premises."
  •  Indirect: The principal instructed the students not to litter the school premises.
  • Direct: He said, "Don’t disturb me while I’m working."
  •  Indirect: He told me not to disturb him while he was working.
  • Direct: The instructor said, "Do not press this button."
